The park attracts lots of wildlife, nature enthusiasts and those seeking adventure who flock to the park to trek and to observe the wildlife. Home to a wide variety of wildlife, the lion and tiger safari within the park attracts the most number of visitors. Lion and tiger safari, which lasts about 20 minutes, are conducted by the forest authorities and no private vehicles are allowed inside the enclosure.

The 2400-year-old Kanheri Caves, located within the park, is another popular tourist attraction. The caves numbering 109, were used by Buddhist monks between the 2nd and 9th centuries as viharas (monasteries) and chaityas (temples). The Trimurti Jain temple located within the park is also popular. The idols of Lord Adinath, Bahubali and Bharat shouldn’t be missed. The Park also encompasses two lakes – Vihar and Tulsi, which supply water to Mumbai.

The Sanjay Gandhi National Park, also known as Borivali National Park, is a unique National Park in that; it lies within the borders of a city. The park lies on the northern fringes of suburban Mumbai, India. It covers an area of 104 sq. km. It is one of Asia's most visited National Parks with 2 million annual visitors. The park also holds claim to be the largest park in the world located within city limits.

The park was notified in 1974. The park offers a pleasant change from the usual sights, attractions, rush and glamour of the big city. The undulating green lands of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park are just the kind of surroundings to which one would love to retreat for some moments of quiet introspection or meditation. The great panoramic views of hills, valleys, lakes and open expanses can actually have a soothing effect on mind, body and soul. The Sanjay Gandhi National park is known for its dense forests, vast bird life, butterflies, and the small population of tigers. The park also encompasses the famous Kanheri Cave complex (between 1st century BC and 9th century AD), two lakes Tulsi and Vihar Lake that provide water to Mumbai city.

The Kanheri Caves demonstrate the Buddhist influence on the art and culture of India. Kanhericomes from the Sanskrit Krishnagiri, which means Black Mountain. Kanheri had become an important Buddhist settlement on the Konkan coast. It’s the most easily reachable among all caves, and also the lonely one in the midst of a national park in India. The 109 caves are reachable through the Sanjay Gandhi national park, a good way to reach a religious destination. The place is splendid, considering the integration of lush greens and rare artistic examples, but is surprised to learn that once it was a thriving trade route, and home to a Buddhist university, well known to the world. The majority of the caves are monasteries, intended for living, study, and meditation. All of them have elaborately carved sculptures, relief’s and pillars and encompass rock-cut stupas for worship.
